If you’re after a little luxury in the heart of Seminyak, but prefer an intimate hotel rather than a big resort, The Colony Hotel offers a range of tastefully elegant rooms minutes from the action.

Set on Jalan Laksmana behind their bistro-style restaurant Urchin, the stark white hotel consists of colonial-style double- and single-storey blocks built around a sparkling central courtyard swimming pool.

The classy rooms range from cosy and compact to more spacious suites, and the gleaming white continues to the spotless, cool air-con interiors with painted walls and pale marble floors. You wouldn’t seem out of place if you were to don a safari suite and pith helmet amid the classical decor (although you may look a little odd on the beaches of Bali). Dark wooden furnishings includes a desk in all rooms, and higher categories add seating and more. TVs, DVD player, safe, kettle and minibar are all standard with ceiling fans offering an alternative to the air-con. The luxurious ambience extends to the marble ensuite bathrooms.

Some second-storey rooms add furnished private balconies, and ground-floors open directly to the shared space surrounding the swimming pool. This pleasant spot exudes clam relation, shaded by palms and fragrant frangipanis, the rectangular stone-clad pool at 16 metres is long enough for a lap too. However, you’ll probably want to head to the nearby beach on a sunny day, as you’ll have to fight for one of the limited sun lounges, although plenty were spare when we dropped by.

Elegance is the name of the game here.

The Colony Hotel has a no children under 16 policy, not seen and not heard. Friendly and enthusiastic staff can fill you in on local tips including where to shop and where to eat, although you won’t have to venture far as The Colony Hotel is located between popular restaurant Sea Circus and cafe/homeware store, Kim Soo. An a la carte breakfast is included, served in the relaxed poolside cafe.

Shop around for a deal as we found the direct rates considerably less than on booking sites. As The Colony Hotel is a small place and may be full, you could also consider Villa Kresna Boutique Suites. If your budget stretches to the five star mark, The Legian offers classic calm with a sea view.
