Somewhat sprawling Abian Ayu Villa harbours a range of comfortable mix and match rooms stepped around a stunning rice terrace. Standard deluxe and family rooms can be occupied separately, or would be great for a small group or large family, as they are clustered together in separate groupings around the swimming pool, some sharing a common terrace area.

Open and airy spacious rooms entertain garden, pond or valley views, and each are individually decorated in a tasteful, classic Balinese style. Antique furniture, traditional cement tiles, homely touches such as paintings, textured fabrics and decorative wooden panels create a welcoming and relaxed ambience. Rooms get larger as the standard rises, but the overall character is similar. Beds have mosquito nets and an assortment of cosy coverings. Lamps and bedside tables are within easy reach. Facilities include a minibar and free WiFi in the fan-cooled rooms.

Clean and comfortable.

Bathrooms too vary in style, some with tubs, others semi-outdoors, yet all are clean and provide hot water. We noticed in one bathroom that the gas canister (for the hot water) was visible under the sink. This seemed unusual, but the area was well ventilated. A shuttered ‘secret’ window in the bathroom of huge superior family room offers a view to a private ‘waterfall’. Terraces and balconies provide comfortable lounges.

Great views.

The restaurant overlooks the pool and whips up Indonesian, Thai and Western dishes, and your included breakfast too. If you’re not relaxed enough by your surroundings, an on-site spa can aid with traditional Balinese treatments. We love the idea of soaking in the (almost) infinity pool perched over the glorious countryside with views to Gunung Agung. Staff are friendly and helpful, and can arrange local trekking if you can leave the pool.

Plenty of space to relax.

Abian Ayu Villa is a solid midrange choice for a range of budgets. Neighbouring Sawah Indah offer a similar budget range with more sweeping views, and if it’s a large family room you’re after, Subak Tabola Villa have a beauty.
