Hidden behind a high wall with a closed wooden door, the traditional roofed doorway opens to a lush tropical garden within the private compound. A pebbled pathway edged with water features and dotted with traditional Balinese temple umbrellas leads to the bungalow style rooms veiled amidst the trees.

Well-appointed cosy rooms feel secluded and relaxing in this peaceful little corner of Tulamben. The cottages are individually styled, but the one we viewed featured rich dark red and light natural tones. Air-con rooms are furnished with a comfortable queen-size mosquito-netted bed. Bedside tables sport stylish carved antique-style lamps, and light switches are within easy reach. A small cupboard houses the minibar, tea-making facilities, a safe and a small flatscreen TV. There’s also a selection of nibbles in case you get peckish.

An open-air ensuite bathroom is coved in tropical vegetation — you can have a hot-water rain shower in your own private mini-garden. Double stone sinks and bamboo towel rails continue to the natural ambience.

Very comfortable rooms.

Sliding glass doors lead to a small terrace furnished with a comfy cushioned lounge, an ideal spot to relax après-SCUBA. Alternatively move over to a poolside lounge — the good-sized swimming pool feels more like a pond, not that it’s slimy — it’s very clean: surrounded by so much thick foliage, we wouldn’t be surprised to see fish.

An open-air dining pavilion houses a long communal table where breakfast including homemade breads and jams is served. Decorative touches here include trays of tropical fruit, seashells and collections of seedpods and coral. An optional dinner featuring a French and Indonesian menu is served each evening, and word is the food is pretty good. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other guests and share your diving experiences.

Minabali Bunga’lo offer massages and host a yoga class every Thursday at 17:00 (also open to non-guests). Breakfast and WiFi are included. There’s no dive shop, but staff can organise diving and tours if needed.

The French owners of Minabali Bunga’lo have made this charming little hotel feel homely and personal. Every detail is considered — it’s clean and well cared for. And even though it misses out on an ocean view, its only about one hundred metres to the sea — We love it, and it’s one of our top picks in Tulamben.
