Six kilometres north of central Tulamben, down a short bone-jarring track, Alam Batu’s oceanfront resort is a change from other more manicured resorts — eleven unusual shaped thatch-roofed bungalows camouflaged amidst thick lush foliage that could almost be described as untamed.

Stone paths meander and ducks run wild (the impression is more natural than unkept). The spacious bungalows come in two flavours — most with a fan, and four with air-con (we love that a high-end resort offers more environmentally friendly fan-cooled rooms).

A comfy abode.

Fan-cooled bungalows are stilted and built from local wood and bamboo, whilst air-con rooms are lower to the ground and of brick and stone. The layouts are essentially the same with a king-sized four-poster canopied bed centring the room. Outdoor (partly covered) ensuite bathrooms lay beyond, where you can shower under the open sky.

Generous veranda’s shaded by the low overhanging roof are furnished with a table, chairs and a daybed. Perfect for a sundowner while admiring the sea views. Staff said they could rig up a mozzie net here if you preferred to sleep au natural.

We love the use of natural materials — the high exposed thatch ceiling, bamboo woven walls, and polished wood or stone floor. The comfortable bungalows are well maintained and feel like your own private hide-a-way secluded behind the trees. Alam Batu also offers three villas — two with a private swimming pool.

An oceanside kidney-shaped infinity pool provides some post-SCUBA relaxation, and a handful of sun lounges offer a place to soak up some rays. The onsite restaurant is housed in an oversized round thatched pavilion, and extends to the rocky, jagged shoreline (Alam Batu means natural rock in Indonesian). Decorated with potted succulents and cactus, contrasting with the pale stone floors and natural volcanic rock. Here included Indonesian or Western breakfast is served buffet-style.

Peak hour.

A spa offers pampering options, and the dive centre can sort you out underwater. Alam Batu have a house reef which can also be snorkelled, and it’s only fifteen minutes by boat to the Liberty wreck site.

Friendly staff mentioned that the resort is German owned and popular with their countrymen, however it is far from exclusive and all are made to feel welcome. A little far from the main action at Tulamben, it may seem you are missing out here, but we love the getaway-from-it-all back-to-nature feel of the resort. If you’d prefer a more manicured-stye resort, Siddhartha is three clicks south towards Tulamben.
