Simple with jungle views
A peaceful yet convenient location, smart modern rooms and a friendly family atmosphere await at Blu Mango Guesthouse, found just down the lane off Jalan Hanoman at the very back corner of Padang Tegal.
Opened in October 2015, they were adding a new family room on the roof when we visited in November 2016, but for now offer two styles of air-con rooms with a leafy jungle outlook beside the river. Rooms on the lower level are tiny, but bright and airy enough that they don’t feel cramped, and the glass-fronted doors open to a wide furnished terrace for soaking up the cool smells and sounds of the forest. The cosy tiled rooms have whitewashed wooden furnishings including a comfortable bed, bedside tables with lamps and stylish blue and white bedding. It’s simple, tasteful and spotless. Scrubbed ensuite bathrooms have hot-water rain-showers with a choice of a handheld showerhead too.
The deluxe rooms above offer a little more elbowroom but the decor and facilities are identical. If you don’t need much space, the less expensive rooms are better value. The simple rooms don’t have TVs and there is no swimming pool, however you can swim at nearby Bucu Guesthouse for 40,000 rupiah. Blu Mango Guesthouse’s charming owners and kids are helpful and obliging. A delicious breakfast and WiFi is included. We think Blu Mango is great value, but if you really would like a pool, Savira Bungalow along the lane is a good option.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
