Excellent pool, friendly guesthouse
If you can’t have a fabulous infinity pool at one of Ubud’s five-star hotels, Bucu Guesthouse’s swimming pool is the next best thing.
The two-level pool in the spacious garden is a thing of beauty; finished in mid-2016, it’s one of the best we’ve seen in Ubud at these prices.
The pool, plus the friendly atmosphere at this well-located, family-run establishment, make Bucu Guesthouse a solid flashpacker (to midrange) option. Rooms at Bucu are split over two levels, with the older-style fan rooms within the family compound, and the newer larger air-con rooms with furnished terraces sitting in a longhouse row on the lower level overlooking the garden and pool. We were unable to view the older rooms, but the tiled modern-styled air-con rooms are spacious, spotless and comfortable, if a tad bland and nondescript. Beds are comfy with good lighting, side tables, air-con controls within reach and large picture windows enable you to lay in bed and admire the pretty garden. Basic bathrooms offer a hot-water shower and are clean and functional.
The manicured garden is young, and yet to be established, but is filled with flowering trees and plants and will be quite lovely. The almost kidney-shaped swimming pool cascades to a smaller wedge shape, trimmed with foliage. Black lava stone surrounds contrast with the blue waters and provide a platform for sunning yourself on the lounges. At the moment there’s not a lot of shade, but as the trees grow, that may change. If the idea of a great pool appeals, Bucu Guesthouse is an excellent choice, however if that’s not a priority, you’ll get better value for just a room around Ubud. We spoke to one guest who with a little negotiation was offered the fan room for 200,000 rupiah, which is an excellent deal for a room with a pool. If you stay elsewhere, the pool at Bucu Guesthouse is available for use by outside guests for 40,000 rupiah.
