Oro Beach Houses and Restaurant

Friendly and relaxing beachside comfort

More on Waitabula

Now we’re talking. Comfortable and relaxing, family-run Oro Beach Houses and Restaurant is one of the few tourist-style hotels in Sumba. Out of the centre of the town of Waitabula, but only nine kilometres from the airport, besides being an attraction itself, Oro Beach makes an excellent base to explore West Sumba.

Travelfish says:

The colourful and cute round brick and thatch beachside bungalows are either standalone doubles or split into two rooms with one double and one twin with an adjoining door— suitable for families. Both styles provide ceiling fan and air-con options. Don’t expect resort-style luxury, but spacious, airy and bright rooms furnished with driftwood mosquito-netted beds and bamboo furniture offer a quintessential beach-house style. Floors are tiled and clean painted walls embellished with artwork and ikat make the rooms feel homey and cheerful. Spotless semi-outdoor Western-style (but cold-water only) bathrooms add to the ambience. They can boil a pot of water if you need a hot wash.

Due to the thatch stye roof, expect a few bugs, but the mozzie net will keep them away while you sleep. Shady furnished verandas are great when there’s a breeze, but can be hot and hardly offer views of the sea. A beachside shaded hut with hammocks proffers other relaxing options.

Paths lead to stunning, unspoiled Oro Beach, which you’ll probably have all to yourself, where you can swim or snorkel — equipment is available to rent. Breakfast with house-baked bread is included, and delicious other meals, based on what’s available at the market, are available from their restaurant, which is part of the double-storey family home.

We were impressed that instead of using plastic straws, drinks are served with hollow papaya stems — environmentally friendly to boot.

Charming hosts Siska from Flores and her German husband Lucus offer a wealth of local knowledge and will make you feel part of the family. To explore from here you’ll need your own transport, or they can provide a car and driver. For local exploration mountain bikes are available to hire.

If it fits your budget, Oro Beach Houses and Resturant is a super spot to start or end to your Sumba trip. We loved the relaxing and remote atmosphere — what’s not to love when you can sleep to the soundtrack of crashing waves? If you really want a sea view, Mario Hotel and Cafe at nearby Mananga Amba Beach can offer you that, albeit with less charming rooms.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
