Great view for almost seven kilometres
Imposing Mario Hotel and Cafe looks out of place on otherwise deserted Pantai Kita, with two large double-storey buildings making their presence felt, towering above the nearby beach, one housing the rooms and the other a restaurant.
Just over 20 kilometres from Tambolaka airport, Mario’s is not too far out to base yourself for day trips around West Sumba.
Currently 12 clean comfortable rooms boast fabulous views of the seven-kilometre beach (although you can’t see all seven). The owner has plans to increase room numbers to 60. At the time of our research in March 2016, they had started building a swimming pool, which seems odd considering the fabulous empty beach is available directly in front. Air-con rooms are furnished with comfortable wooden beds sporting spring mattresses and clean white linen, a small desk and flat screen satellite TV. The styling is simple and a tad bland, but small photos of local villages add decoration (and some strangely include pictures of tourists). Modern ensuite hot-water bathrooms provide large picture windows to view the ocean (through the room) — with blinds if you prefer more privacy.
Balcony furnishings are minimal — we only saw one chair. Top floor rooms offer better views, yet rates are the same as the ground floor. Rooms are priced according to the number of beds — twins are more expensive than doubles. The front of the hotel has a bit too much concrete for our liking, but perhaps there are plans to pave it. A nearby (paved) area provides shady umbrellas with tables and chairs, perfect for a sunset beer.
Breakfast of nasi goreng and a boiled egg is included. The attached restaurant serves a range of Indonesian food including local seafood. Prices are a little higher than in town, but won’t break the bank. WiFi is free, if you can connect. If an unrestricted sea view isn’t a priority, nearby Oro Beach Houses and Restaurant has sweet beachside bungalows and a friendly family atmosphere.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
