Comfortable colourful homestay
A riot of mismatched patterns and colours, friendly Merzy Homestay offers a comfortable option 100 metres from the beach at Pero.
Some 45 kilometres southwest of Tambolaka airport, the predominantly Muslim fishing village of Pero is a good base for visiting villages and beaches along the south coast.
There’s no signage, but you can’t miss the bright pink, blue and aqua house surrounded by colourful flowers. The large airy home is tiled throughout, with a different pattern and colour in each room. Pedestal fan-cooled bedrooms offer quality beds with spring mattresses. Padded bedheads are still wrapped in plastic and bright patterned sheets contrast or clash with colourful painted walls. Some rooms provide small tables and wardrobes, in others it’s just the bed.
Shared living spaces continue the cosy theme, with ornate patterned drapes, overstuffed chintz armchairs, chandeliers and knick-knacks. It’s homely and comfortable, and granny would feel right at home. Shared bathrooms are mandi style, with a bucket flush throne toilet. The bathrooms are old and stained, but clean, and the rest of the house is spotless. Simple home-cooked meals are included and can be shared in the dining room. The hospitable hosts at Merzy Homestay will treat you as family.
