With a prime hilltop position overlooking stunning Kerewee Beach, Sumba Sunset Beach offers three modest bamboo and thatch huts which differ slightly in size and can sleep two to four guests.
Simple bamboo beds with foam mattresses are provided in some rooms, others just have a mattress on the floor, all with mosquito nets. Rooms are open and breezy and have sensational views. Hammocks rigged up on the shady bamboo balconies will relax you into a lazy beachside mood, and it may be difficult to venture the 300 metres downhill to the beach. Two very basic outdoor bamboo bathrooms with a plastic bucket mandi and bucket-flush throne toilet are shared between the three rooms and the young friendly family owners. Meals and free transport to and from the beach (for the lazy) are included. No WiFi and limited phone signal means you can truly embrace the get-away-from-it-all ambience. The owner is a keen surfer and can give good advice on the best breaks. Boat trips can be organised for 300,000 rupiah per person. We love this little place, and the view is magnificent, but 600,000 for a double, even including meals, is bordering on silly.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
