Sleep & Sleep was so brand new when we dropped in May 2017 they hadn’t hosted any guests yet (but had future bookings!) and the building above was still under construction—they offer Semarang’s first capsule-style dorm beds.

The hostel scores an excellent central location, 850 metres to Poncol train station, one kilometre to Tawang train station, and just 500 metres to Kota Lama, the historic centre of Semarang. Situated on the lower ground floor of the building, Sleep & Sleep is not quite underground and high windows let in light to the communal areas.

For now, light traffic.

Staff were very enthusiastic and welcoming, no doubt to have their first potential guest to walk through the door—we were asked for a selfie session, so don’t be surprised to see photos of a Travelfish writer when you visit! Sleep & Sleep offer three 30-bed mixed and (maybe) female-only air-con dorms. Beds are configured in two double-storey rows with a narrow pathway between in the windowless rooms, leading at one end to the bathrooms and the other to the entrance hall and personal lockers.

Pods are sturdy purpose-built structures, but somewhat narrow and instead of being completely enclosed, mesh screens divide the beds, enabling the air-con-cooled air to freely flow, but still offering privacy with panelled sections, although less so than a conventional pod dorm. Mattresses are a tad thin, but felt springy and comfortable, and sport crisp clean white linen. Blankets, towels and lockers are included in the rate, but require a 100,000 rupiah deposit. Each pod provides an individual reading light and power socket. Top bunks are accessed by orange zig-zag sturdy metal ladders which as well as being functional add a fun element to the room.

The room doesn’t offer much space for storing big bags and the lockers outside the rooms although spacious wouldn’t fit a large wheelie bag—you’ll probably have to drag it into bed with you. Travel light, or choose alternative accommodation.

Ensuite bathrooms are spacious and (of course) unused at the time of our visit—lets hope they keep them as pristine. Hot showers, separate toilet cubicles and smart square wash basins follow a bright white and orange theme, fun and fresh to start your day.

We liked the spacious bunker-style communal area with polished cement floor with a grey painted roadway — watch for pedestrians! A mini-snack bar offers hot drinks, snacks and a vending machine, and soon to be opened, a cafe will serve breakfast (not included) and maybe other meals. The hostel has a no drugs, no guns, no durian and no fireworks policy, but it seems their toilets are alien friendly!

If you’re in Semarang for a short stop, and just desire a cheap sleep, Sleep & Sleep is the best smart and clean place in town. If 30 in a room is too many bods for your liking, The Backpacker at Simpang Lima offers more conventional double-bunk beds with six to ten in a room, friendly staff and lovely outdoor chill areas, and for single private rooms with share bathroom Iman Bonjol Hostel (T: (0243) 562 223; (0823) 2624 9429) is not a bad deal, though couples and friends travelling together will get better value elsewhere.
