Guesthouse accommodation is a little thin on the ground in Semarang city centre, but in the heart of Kota Lama, the old historical city, Achterhuis Guesthouse opened in August 2016 and offers simple affordable air-con rooms behind Tekodeko Koffiehuis.

The guesthouse is set in an L-shaped building, with single-storey on one arm, and double-storey on the other, all edging a small grassy courtyard garden with share balconies and verandas running the length of the building. Upstairs rooms (A5, A6 and A7) catch the breeze and are the better deal.

We’re not sure if this is a historic building, but it certainly has a colonial feel with simple whitewashed brick, subway-tiled floors and solid teak doors. All-white interiors are smallish and spartan, but in a way that adds to the historical ambience, not with a cheap and nasty feel. Rooms offer comfortable twin or double beds with clean white linen, a small desk with a stool, a tiny wall-mounted flatscreen TV and a hook with hangers for your clothes. A small window manages to flood the room with light (maybe it’s just all the white surfaces). Pocket-sized ensuite bathrooms are a little stained at the edges but clean enough and have hot-water showers.

The guesthouse could do with a couple of extras such as bedside lighting and somewhere to sit on the balcony/veranda, but a few wooden benches dot the grounds for some outdoor relaxation. A nearby business has bikes for hire which are kept near the reception area of the guesthouse, and are an ideal way to explore the historic surrounds of Semarang.

Spartan but bright rooms.

Breakfast isn’t included, but the terrific Tekodeko Koffiehuis in front opens at 09:00.

Achterhuis Guesthouse is easily missed from the street, look for the sign near Tekodeko Koffiehuis. For a guesthouse with a bit more of a homely feel, head out of town five kilometres south of the city centre to Djajanti House, or for a cheap sleep in a (very basic) historic building, Hotel Pelangi Indah is well located near Tawang train station.
