Did someone say infinity pool? Louis Kienne Pandanaran is not only graced with one of the best swimming pools in town, the spacious comfortable rooms are as good as some five-star joints we’ve seen, and here for a very midrange budget.

We were so impressed, we ditched our (decent) flashpacker, found a good deal online and splurged in a bit of luxury for a couple of days. This Singapore owned business-style hotel offers another almost identical (though older) hotel up the road at Simpang Lima in the centre of Semarang’s shopping district, but we prefer the location at Pandanaran, near Lawang Sewu, as from the 24th floor rooftop pool you can see over the historic building and beyond to the airport and port area.

The gobsmacking rooftop pool runs 15 metres in length, but is a continuous shallow depth of just over a metre, great for wading and deep enough for a decent lap, but no diving! An even shallower kids pool sits at one end and for a bubbly soak, a jacuzzi at the other. For gym junkies, a glass cube beside the pool houses a range of fitness machines, with such a terrific view, we were (almost) temped to have a go.

Sun lounges and tables and chairs provide a spot to kick back and order a drink (you may have to wait as the bar and kitchen are on a lower level), and enjoy the scenery, but there’s not much shade up here, so be sure to lather on the sunblock or save your view gazing for the evening as the pool is open until 22:00. Louis Kienne Simpang Lima does have the advantage of a rooftop restaurant.

Plushly carpeted air-con rooms offer ample space for swinging cats, downward dogs and other animal antics. Floor to ceiling windows enjoy great city views (request a corner room for more windows), and are fitted with blackout curtains for a sleep in. Oversized double (wider than super-king!) or twin beds, desk, seating and large smart TVs are standard and amenities include a safe, tea-making equipment and hairdryer, but noticeably lacking a mini-bar. Smart, modern, clean bathrooms provide a decent amount of bench space, lovely smelly lotions and potions, and a strong hot-water shower.

Direct bookings with the hotel include a buffet breakfast, but online deals are less expensive without. The unfortunately named restaurant / bar, Gastro Cafe, is open all day, but we felt a little overpriced, although one of the few places locally that serves alcohol. Service is friendly and professional—a couple of minor maintenance issues in our room were fixed promptly, and the manager organised one of the staff to point out the best food places in Simpang Lima, as well as offering a free lift there. A free shuttle service runs between their two hotels and Paragon Mall.

If your budget allows, treat yourself to a day or two at Louis Kienne Pandanaran, as it is excellent value. If you’d prefer your fabulous pool with a leafy hilltop view, Hotel Grand Edge, three kilometres south of the city may just have the edge in the stunning rooftop infinity pool stakes as they have the addition of a funky bar and restaurant attached, and rooms there are even more spacious, however the style is a tad less plush. For an alternative comfortable midrange in the city, brand new (opened December 2016) Hotel GrandDhika Pemuda is a good choice with very generous rooms and for true five-star service, Gumaya Tower Hotel.
