Tucked away in a quiet backstreet minutes from the urban hubbub, striking Rumah Turi cascades with vertical gardens that proliferate with life.

Frogs croak and bees buzz in this inner city “jungle”, an eco-conscious boutique hotel, simultaneously exuding a calm relaxed ambience. When hotels declare themselves “eco-friendly”, we often take that information with a grain of salt, but for Rumah Turi it’s not just green washing: in 2012 the hotel was selected as Best Tropical Building for implementing sustainable building ideas in an ASEAN Energy Award.

Beyond the garden, the hotel presents a double-storey L-shaped block along with a large open cafe with yoga/music studio above, all connected via overhead walkways. Rumah Turi offers three styles of rooms, featuring parquet floors constructed from recycled timber and like Goldilocks we think the middle one is best.

All rooms are air-con cooled and furnished with comfy contemporary styled beds along with a desk, TV, minibar and tea-making facilities, the major difference being size and windows (or the absence of). The lower category Sereh rooms are very cramped and oddly lack windows making them feel very claustrophobic, we don’t know if that’s for an energy saving reason, but unless you find the idea cosy, save your energy and skip it.

Good-sized beds.

We prefer the ground-floor Wuni rooms which are a decent comfortable size, and though they don’t have external windows, a floor to ceiling glass wall faces a pleasant leafy internal courtyard. The upstairs rooms in this category are not as inviting as they just view the upper wall of the courtyard, surprisingly lacking in greenery considering the rest of the gardens here. If you prefer a little more space, Kemuning rooms offer a double bed plus a day bed and other than being slightly larger size are much the same as the Wuni rooms, again go for the ground floor.

Ensuite bathrooms are clean and functional with modern fittings and semi-screened hot-water showers. Furnished shared terraces are a pleasant spot to contemplate the lovely garden, but you might want to whack on some mozzie spray.

Breakfast is included in the rate, served in the breezy onsite cafe. We were charmed by the lovely helpful staff at Rumah Turi who are full of local info and insight as well as being impressed by the hotel’s sustainable water and energy practices, also notable are displays of posters offering all kinds of environmental and cultural info. Worth supporting.
