Smack in the middle of Solo’s traditional batik district, Kampong Laweyan, Roemahkoe Heritage Hotel was built in 1938 as a private residence for a wealthy batik merchant—renovated in 2003, this preserved Art Deco building, now stylish boutique hotel is our top pick in Solo.

The hotel may not have the most central city location, two kilometres west of Taman Sriwedari, but is well worth the little extra effort to reach. Twelve Deluxe rooms and two suites are housed in a U-shaped longhouse that wraps a pretty garden tinkling with water features around a central open-style bungalow that accommodates the restaurant, reception, lounges and small batik store. Exquisite original Art Deco features include detailed teak wood panelling and stained glass, cement tiles, mirrors and furnishings.

Twin and double Deluxe rooms are small, but cosy and full of charm and feature hardwood floors and comfortable beds, although there’s not a lot of room for other furnishings. Teak shutters and stained-glass windows tend to make the room a little dark when closed, however pleasant for sleeping.

Mod-cons include air-con and a small flatscreen TV. Compact and clean ensuite marble bathrooms enjoy hot-showers and feature quirky washbasins. We viewed a couple of Deluxe rooms and both had slightly different layouts and styling, so you may wish to check a few first.

Almost museum-like in places.

The suites are almost triple the size of the Deluxe and worth the extra outlay if you’d like a little more space and features. Here the floors are original Deco cement tiles and Deco mouldings on the high ceilings are also worth noting. A separate small living room offers a private spot to relax and the bedroom we viewed is furnished with an iron four-poster bed and unusual Art Deco stepped side tables. The ensuite bathroom is more spacious than the Deluxe rooms, and adds a bathtub.

Surrounding the main building, a wide furnished verandah offers a number of relaxing areas, styled like mini-museums with framed historic information (although disappointingly only in Indonesian) and photographs. We love the original light fittings and ceiling fans here. Roemahkoe’s restaurant serves limited Western and Indonesian fare, we didn’t try the food and it receives mixed reviews.

Plenty of spots to lounge around in.

If you are interested in Javanese arts and culture, Roemahkoe offer classes and tours where you can discover traditional batik, gamelan and wuku, a Javanese form of astrology. Charming and attentive staff add a personal touch to this delightful and elegant boutique hotel.

If you’d prefer stay in the heart of the tourist area, consider Omah Sinten or The Royal Surakarta Heritage both with heritage styling or for bare bones basic, stick your nose into Hotel Keparabon if only for a look at the original deco features in the public areas, which unfortunately don’t extend to the run-down rooms.

Rooms are comfortable throughout.
