Hotel Blambangan not only enjoys an excellent central Banyuwangi location, but offers a range of lovely rooms, a smart little swimming pool and a stylish street-front restaurant.

Eminent Indonesian architect, Andra Martin (who also designed Katamama in Bali’s Seminyak) contributed to the hotel’s design which mixes a contemporary minimalist style with traditional Javanese elements and colonial architecture.

The rooms occupy a double-storey building, behind a renovated Dutch colonial cottage which houses the restaurant. Compact superior twin and double rooms are light-filled thanks to the large picture windows and as they sit at the back of the building are protected from the traffic noise. Deluxe rooms open to or overlook the pool and enjoy furnished private terraces or a shared balcony. These rooms, although bright with the shutters open, are cool and dark for sleeping with the traditional style wooden shutters closed, also helping to keep out the noise from the pool and street.

Stylish simple interiors hint at Javanese traditional architecture with clean whitewashed walls, tiled floors and feature teak doors, shutters and furnishings. Large beds afford thick comfy mattresses and snowy white linens, with the more spacious deluxe rooms adding seating and built-in desk/bench in some. Air-con, telephone and a small flatscreen TV are standard while the deluxe terrace rooms add a minibar.

Touches of retro here and there.

Spick and span ensuite bathrooms are a bit of a squeeze, but stylish and functional and the hot-water rain-showers are glass screened, so the room remains dry. The focal point is the sparkling narrow swimming pool, an inviting turquoise blue surrounded by grey wooden decking. It’s long enough for a short lap, but more suitable for a splash about. A handful of deckchairs are shaded by the restaurant awning, but the pool itself is exposed to the sun.

The breezy restaurant harks back to old Java with wiring fans, Deco-style teak and rattan furniture and retro decor touches including an old box radio and historic photos. Here your included breakfast is served and you can help yourself to traditional snacks and tea or coffee throughout the day, handy for a late night pre Ijen pick me up, with other meals also available. They can also provide a boxed breakfast for your climb.

The pool is not huge, but probably very welcome after a climb.

Hotel Blambangan is located across from Taman Blambangan, a popular city park offering the opportunity to experience the day-to-day life of the city. For a comfortable midrange stay in the centre of the city you can’t go wrong here, and for folks on a more flashpacker budget it’s worth considering as many of the better flashpacker digs are out of the town centre and you may well be spending the difference on transport.

If it’s still a little steep, the centrally located business style Hotel Selamat is worth a look, as is their lower priced sister hotel, Asiera west of the centre. Alternatively, Ketapang Indah further out of town towards the harbour is a popular resort style stay with a range of decent rooms on offer.
