Bromo’s best value flashpacker rooms are to be found at Otix Guesthouse. You won’t have a view of the caldera, but depending on the room you choose, the mountain valley scenery is not a bad consolation.

Perched on one of the two main roads leading to the crater rim, it’s a 400 metre walk uphill for a gander at the volcano. Up for grabs are three room categories, newer doubles with ensuite bathrooms; basic older-style doubles with a share local-style bathroom and triple rooms (double plus a single) also with shared facilities that we were unable to view.

Get in quick and nab one of the simple but clean and bright new doubles housed in a brick duplex alongside the road. Interiors are light-filled due to windows on both sides, however this results in them being rather cold and you’ll want to wear socks on the icy tiled floors or just snuggle up in bed. Don’t expect too much luxury, and you may think you’ve stumbled into an 80s time warp with the almost-kidney-shaped vinyl lounge and glass side table oddly juxtaposed by a wall-mounted washbasin which surprisingly runs warm water.

The bed is very comfortable with a decent spring mattress and colourful sheets, but oddly made up with the blanket under the doona and no top sheet (we just flipped this around). There’s no bedside lighting, but the main bright room light can be flipped from a switch near the bed, and a couple of power outlets allow you to charge your devices when the electricity is on. Blackouts are not uncommon, however they do have a back up generator, but may need a reminder to turn it on.

Decor is unusual.

Clean ensuite bathrooms are wet-style with no hooks or racks and although we were promised a hot shower, it was barely so and the water in the washbasin was warmer, but challenging to shower in. Thin towels are supplied and there’s a towel rack in the room as well as basic toiletries including a toothbrush.

These rooms sit right at the front of the guesthouse, close to the road which becomes a virtual freeway of jeeps at 3am, so if you are not planning on joining them, pack earplugs.

Comfortable and warm beds.

Down the valley, with the advantage of being quieter, a small cottage houses the older-style rooms which although cheaper are not as good value, but fine compared to other places in town. Here the bed fills the tiny room with hardly any space for your bags although they are still bright and clean. The two rooms share a cosy common furnished lounge room and older-style bathroom with a squat toilet and warm shower.

The rooms we didn’t view occupy a modern bright orange double-storey building next to the newer rooms. Staff informed us that these are the largest rooms, all with good views and that the share-bathroom here is Western-style.

Breakfast is not included, but can be added for an additional 25,000 rupiah per person. Staff are friendly although their English is limited. They can help with onward travel arrangements and offered us the best transport deal around.

We were lucky and got in early, so if you plan on arriving late, ring ahead to book. Walk in rates were a slightly better deal than those offered on booking sites, but it was low season. If they’re full, check out Yog Homestay, although not all rooms here are equal and you may wish to view a few. Alternatively the economy rooms with share bathroom at Cafe Lava Hostel have an old-school charm.
