If you don’t mind laying down a fistful of coin, Jawa Jiwa is the fanciest digs in town—the fact that they have a helipad my give some indication of what to expect!

This upmarket mountain lodge is housed in modern double-storey buildings around a pretty sculpture-filled landscaped mountain garden. Surprisingly large with 50 rooms that cover an extensive range, some which can accommodate up to nine guests.

Well decorated, comfortable rooms.

Well appointed tasteful rooms are spacious and comfortable with modern decor featuring dark wood and neutral tones incorporating traditional textiles and contemporary landscape photography. In-room facilities include TVs and tea-making equipment adding a minibar in some categories. Suites add dining and living areas as well as an open fireplace (yes, it does get that cold).

Unfortunately for other rooms, they are unheated and the cold tiled and wooden floors can get rather chilly. Rooms are well laid out with no surprises—ample storage, lighting and power outlets and upper floors add a balcony. Some rooms enjoy sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscape while others overlook the garden, often within the same category, so request a room with a view.

Ensuite marble bathrooms are clean and modern with hot-water showers. The rooms at Jawa Jiwa are by far the best in the area, however for the price cleanliness and maintenance could be improved as we noticed a couple of issues, more so in the common areas than the rooms themselves.

The main reception area, lounge and restaurant are located across the road and the Belanga Restaurant on the upper level boasts a beautiful view, making for a pleasant spot to while away a few hours while you sample some local fare. Additionally an on-site Art Gallery houses a permanent exhibition of photography featuring Gunung Bromo incorporating a cafe where you can enjoy afternoon tea. If you’d like a change of venue for a meal, their other property, Pagupon Bromo just down the road has a terrific cafe.

A modern affair.

Jawa Jiwa’s friendly and attentive staff can organise jeeps to Bromo’s viewpoints and other local excursions. If you are only in the area for a quick overnight trip and don’t need such luxury, you may be just as happy at their “backpacker” lodge, Pagupon Bromo. For accommodation closer to the volcano, lower your expectations and anticipate poor value.
