If the privacy of a capsule dorm appeals, but feels too claustrophobic, the dorm at Huize Jon Hostel enjoys the best of both worlds—each curtained pod is outfitted with a small window with a view to either outside or the internal stairwell providing the enclosed bed with a sense of space and openness.

The hostel bags a terrific central city location between the Tugu monument and Alun-Alun and from the street looks more like an office than backpacker accommodation within a row of commercial shophouses. In point of fact, the business began (and continues) as a travel agent offering good value local tours, including to Gunung Bromo. Prior to their Bromo trip, tourists would often request a place to sleep for a couple of hours, hence the hostel was born as a sideline service, however don’t expect sideline treatment, this is one of the best backpacker joints in town.

The lower floor of the double-story hostel houses the tour desk and the hostel’s communal chill space with the ambience of a funky cafe. Here you’ll find an assortment of Indonesian Deco wood and rattan armchairs and tables along with an intriguing display of bric-a-brac including an ancient black-and-white TV (that still works), shadow puppets, books, a collection of old alarm clocks and other ephemera. When we visited in January 2018, friendly staff mentioned that the plan is to open a cafe here in the near future.

Upstairs is the spacious 14-bed mixed gender air-con dorm with solid metal bunks lining two walls. Some of the top bunks are double sized, suitable for two people—not a double bed, but with two single mattresses, one raised a step above the other. Ladders and safety rails are good and sturdy. Each pod is equipped with a quality spring mattress, sporting bright checked-pattern clean matching linen and a soft and cosy blanket; individual lighting and power socket; privacy curtain and as mentioned, a small window that can be opened for air. We love this idea—the only negatives are that is lets in the early morning light when you may want a sleep in, and could benefit from a small light-blocking curtain and due to the traffic, can be a bit noisy—pack earplugs.

Small lockers are only large enough for valuables, but the dorm is roomy enough to store bags on the floor. Spotless shared bathrooms are also mixed gender with separate cubicles for hot showers and western toilets, but you’ll have to bring your own towel. A wide balcony on the upper level to the side of the dorm is decked out with a few potted palms, but plans to add beanbags and seating will turn this into another pleasant chill area. Breakfast is not included, but you can help yourself to tea and coffee and a ton of eateries are at the doorstep. The helpful onsite travel agency, Bromo Holiday, can arrange tours to Bromo (obviously), around Malang and further afield.

Across the road, funky-style Woodlot Hostel also offers comfortable pod-style dorms, but you’ll be sharing the dorm with a few more bods here and may have to queue for the somewhat limited bathrooms. Alternately across town, Kampong Tourist with a congenial traveller vibe offers dorms and privates with shared facilities in bamboo huts on the rooftop of Helios Hotel or friendly family run Jona’s Homestay in a quiet street to the north of the city has a range of basic backpacker-style rooms.
