This social “tourist village” is not to be found in some side lane like a regular city kampung, but Kampong Tourist snares an unusual rooftop location above Helios Hotel, 700 metres north of Malang Station.

On offer are three private bamboo and thatch gazebos that can each sleep up to three with shared facilities, and a huge mixed fan-cooled dorm also constructed from bamboo with beds that sleep one, two or three in a beehive-like configuration stacked four beds high. Mattresses are comfy (though well aged), but you’ll have to make the dorm bed up yourself with a bottom sheet and blanket supplied.

Restless sleepers beware on the higher bunks as there are no safety rails. Most bunks are curtained for privacy with individual lighting and power outlets. Small lockers will hold valuables, you’ll need to supply your own padlock, and bags can be stored on the floor, though it could get messy when full.

Due to the open nature of the bamboo building, expect early morning light, traffic noise from the street below and the odd bug—we’d probably string up a mozzie net in wet season. The clean but basic shared bathrooms offer hot-water showers and western toilets in separate cubicles with individual facilities for the dorms and private rooms, but it’s BYO toilet paper (or go local).

Unless you’re on a really tight budget, we’d try to nab one of the uber cute gazebos. These charming huts are slightly raised, each with a small curtained window and sliding bamboo doors from which you can enjoy panoramic city views. The simple rooms provide a small wall mounted fan with sufficient lighting and power outlets, a mirror and single mattresses on the ground which can be pushed together to make a double. Colourful clean sheets, a light blanket and towel are supplied.

Potted plants and outdoor seating offer an almost tropical island ambience to this relaxing rooftop retreat (if you imaging the hum off the traffic is gently lapping waves) as does the terrific convivial communal area and cafe/bar which serves a variety of local and western snacks, juices and cold beer. Free city tours with local students, cooking classes, massages by the blind, local tours and a host of local info are on offer.

Although the accommodation here is about as basic as it gets, the fun backpacker vibe makes Kampong Tourist a solid choice. Note that to reach this rooftop hotel requires climbing several flights of stairs. If you’d like a little more comfort, you could always check into one of the air-con rooms in Helios Hotel below and hang out at the Kampong Tourist’s rooftop bar. When we visited in January 2018, Helios Hotel were offering cheaper rates for foreign tourists if you book direct. If you’re budget is for a dorm only, and you’d prefer a more intimate experience, Huize Jon Hostel offers a great deal.
