Probolinggo’s best flashpacker deal can be found at neat and friendly Clover Homestay and Cafe tucked away in a small street two-and-a-half kilometres from Probolinggo Station, walking distance to museums and restaurants.

Up for grabs are three styles of rooms, all clean, cosy and comfy, housed in an attractive duck-egg blue and white painted single-storey longhouse, and double-storey block cascading with a curtain of foliage. The motel-style setup edges an open courtyard/carpark alongside their traveller-friendly cafe. Deluxe rooms are housed in the single-storey block and Standard and Superior rooms in the double-storey.

Smart rooms.

Interiors of the bright, tiled, air-con rooms are very similar with a colourfully painted feature wall, built-in hanging space with shelving, comfy beds and all equipped with a wall-mounted TV, the only difference is that the Deluxe rooms enjoy a tad more cat-swinging capacity over the ground floor Superior rooms and the upper floor Standard rooms have cold showers only.

Beds sport quality spring mattresses and a bottom sheet, but the sarong that serves as a bed runner looks pretty but would be pretty useless as a top sheet if there are two of you. For folks who like their air-con on Arctic (not very environmentally friendly), you’ll find a blanket or doona in the cupboard. Scrubbed but basic ensuite bathrooms are a riot of pastel patterned tiles with modern Western toilets and a small washbasin. Hot-water showers (Deluxe and Superior rooms) run on gas, so if you find they run cold let the staff know to change the tank.

The shared terrace and balcony are unfurnished, forcing you to be social and join other guests in the cafe. The congenial vibe here is assisted by the friendly staff and English-speaking owner who is full of anecdotes and happy to share local intel. Breakfast is included, and though it offers a bit more variety than is usual, some of the choices are a little odd (to our taste)—the vanilla pancake was served with a dollop of radioactive looking jelly, scrambled eggs and fish-shaped crackers. Other meals and snacks are available and cold beers are on sale, although their supply is limited—do feel free to suggesting they put more than one in the freezer at a time. However they don’t seem to mind if you bring you own when they run out.

Clover Homestay and Cafe provide a range of travel services including Bromo tours and if you’re feeling a little stressed, they can sort you out with a massage for 100,000 rupiah and also keep smelly travellers happy with a laundry service.

Breakfast can be memorable.

We think Clover Homestay and Cafe is a solid bet, they even state on their website that they have a “worldwide reputation for excellence”, and who’s to argue with a bit of self-promoting hyperbole, but if they happen to be full on your dates, try Rumah Wahidin about 800 meters east with a similar price point and offering decent rooms around a lovely garden.

For folks on a tighter budget, Homestay Suyoso is another friendly option and the owner speaks good English although the rooms are a tad spartan. Alternatively, closer to the bus terminal Hary’s Homestay is a decent flashpacker pick.
