Close to Probolinggo’s Bayuangga bus terminal, and walking distance to the departure point for minibuses to Bromo, Hary’s Homestay offers a decent and clean option, and is the best value for flashpackers of the hotels along this strip.

A motel-style double-storey L-shaped modern building sits back a little from the busy road behind their restaurant, with a couple of rooms in a smaller block at the front, but be wary of these as they are very noisy and request a room at the back.

Tiled modern-styled interiors are somewhat spartan with charmless beige decor, but spick and span with a decent spring bed with bedside lighting and a shelf for your book, small desk with a stool, TV and rooms offer a choice of air-con or fan-cooled. Pack a sleep sheet if you desire more than the thin blanket provided. Bare-bones ensuite bathrooms are clean with a modern throne-style toilet, but no handbasin and cold water showers only. Tiny private terraces on the ground floor rooms are furnished with a small table and one stool and upper floor rooms share communal seating.

Breakfast is included, served in the on-site restaurant or your room. We were shown a rate card that also included prices without breakfast, but staff said that was not an option (though you could try to argue the point). The young staff member who showed us around had good English and was super enthusiastic.

If you’d prefer a hot shower, Lava Lava Hotel next door have the goods and although rooms have a little more character with carved wooden beds, the cheaper rooms sport foam mattresses rather than a spring bed and the bathrooms are looking very tired. Alternatively, along the road, Bromo View Hotel’s higher priced rooms are not bad but forget their cheaper rooms and look elsewhere. Choices here are fine if you have an early bus and don’t wish to travel far, but for hot water and a more facilities Clover Homestay five kilometres away in the centre of town offers better value.
