Ground control to Major Tom... You will feel like you’re sitting in a tin can at Tab Capsule Hotel with its Japanese-style self contained capsule rooms.

The hotel (we’d call it a hostel) is situated about 150 metres south of Monmen Kapal Selam (the submarine museum), overlooking Surabaya’s Kalimas River. Grouped over the modern four-storey building with some floors single gender only, rooms contain four or eight single capsules with a shared ensuite bathroom as well as double capsule rooms with private ensuite.

Not suitable for claustrophobics, within the comfortable moulded pods you are virtually sealed off from the world in your own private little universe. Sliding doors close completely and cool air-con is pumped in, but is not individually controlled. Capsules are fitted out with a comfy and clean mattress sporting quality white sheets and a control panel that would put any science fiction space traveller to shame. We’re not sure what the whirling blue light does, but inside you’ll find a small flatscreen TV, earphones, power outlets, USB points, fold down desk, reading light, mirror, hanging hooks and fire extinguisher (for when the Stormtroopers attack).

Depending on the room, you can choose from capsules that open from the side or the end, but both are similar when sealed. Four-capsule rooms are very narrow with a bank of four bag lockers dividing the two lots of two stacked capsules. The higher pods are reached via a sturdy ladder.

The wet-style ensuite bathroom is squeaky clean and provides a combo hot-water shower and western style toilet as well as a small washbasin. Larger eight-capsule rooms are more spacious, even though you are sharing with more bods. The one we viewed provided three ensuite bathroom cubicles, one with a combo toilet and shower and the other two a separate toilet and shower, which we thought was a good ratio for the eight beds.

Some rooms are graced with a narrow window overlooking the river, and though it’s pleasant, you’ll not see anything from inside your pod, however it does offer some natural light to the room. Double capsule rooms are a little odd, with very little space to store your bags. The windowless room contains one double capsule that comfortably sleeps a couple, positioned loft style, high on a platform, accessed via a ladder along with a small hot-water ensuite bathroom.

Tab Capsule Hotel is rather novel if you’ve never experienced this type of dorm and the capsules are fun for a night. What turns Tab Capsule Hotel from an ordinary hostel into a good one (besides the funky space-age capsules) is their ace rooftop bar, @TabElevel, overlooking the river and city, also open to non guests. To be honest, it wasn’t really pumping when we visited, but this pleasant breezy spot serves cold beers at some of the best prices in Surabaya and with a few more punters you could be in for a fun night (that’s if they nix the karaoke).

Breakfast is included as are transfers to the railway station and airport. Friendly and enthusiastic staff mentioned that until the end of 2018, Tab Capsule Hotel are offering a promo with a discounted stay and meals in the bar if you show your train ticket.

Tab Capsule Hotel opened its doors in September 2107 and was looking spick and span when we dropped by in January 2018, we hope they keep it maintained. If you’d prefer a more down-to-earth hostel, The Hostel is basic and old-school, but has a fun traveller vibe and couples may find better value at the far from futuristic Hotel Paviljoen.
