Spacious and stylish
Funky Morrissey’s rooms are set up like mini serviced apartments and make a good option if you’re travelling with kids or are stuck in Jakarta for a while, as generous sized rooms are all decked out with a full kitchen and studio style lounge, plus the location couldn’t be more central.
The modern glass-fronted hotel is located on the corner of busy Jalan Wahid Hasyim and Jalan Jaksa, close to bars, restaurants and sights with popular Italian restaurant, Ocha and Balla resident on the ground floor. Several styles of room are on offer and as well as the hotel’s own separate restaurant, a rooftop swimming pool and gym all add up to a decent choice for your Jakarta stay.
The modern industrial style sticks to a palette of black, white and grey with dark stained wood or tiled flooring, white-painted exposed brick walls and raw cement ceilings. High ceilings and large windows add to the sense of space, while some rooms offer views, others provide no outlook with defused glass windowpanes. Studio rooms are long and narrow and other options include loft-style rooms with a living area below and sleeping above, as well as one- and two-bedroom suites.
Beds and linen are of a good quality, while comfy couches in front of flatscreen TVs and work desks are standard throughout. Larger rooms include dining facilities, with a kitchen equipped with stove top, microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge plus crockery and utensils, and there’s always room service too. A quirky stylised dog sculpture adds a bit of fun to each room. Bathrooms continue the hip industrial style with white subway tiles and glass-screened hot-water showers, in some cases the bathrooms are somewhat compact and the washbasin is placed in the main room while larger rooms add bath tubs.
The swimming pool, gym and an outdoor chill-out spot bag a good view of the Jakarta skyline on non-smoggy day from their rooftop location. The narrow rectangular pool is long enough for a lap, but watch you don’t hit your head on the metal poles stuck at the sides supporting the skylighted roof.
Morrissey’s amenities also include a free self service laundry room (as well as a service if you desire) and as they say on their website: sorting socks is a great way to meet people! The buffet breakfast included in the rate mixes local and Western options, served in the ground-floor cafe.
Charming staff are super friendly, relaxed and not stuffy—just like the hotel. If a stay at Morrissey Hotel is not within your means, but the swimming pool entices, at the time of research (March 2018) they were offering a weekend brunch and pool deal for 220,000++ rupiah (which included towels and unlimited poolside soft drinks too). Even if you don’t need a kitchen, Morrissey’s spacious digs and central locale are reason enough to stay.
Alternatively if a pool and size are not priorities, Kosenda Hotel and Artotel both offer style and comfort.
