Calm, cool and bright
Behind the buzzing Hummingbird Eatery, intimate boutique-style Hummingbird Guesthouse’s eight bright, comfortable and well designed rooms occupy a triple-storey building with pleasant airy open-plan communal living rooms at each level.
The spacious tiled air-con rooms offer contemporary minimal decor with smart pale wood furnishings accented with pops of pale green while teak shutters and stained glass hint at classic Javanese style creating a clam cool ambience. Big bouncy twin or double beds sport snowy white linen enhanced with eye-catching runners and cushions with good bedside lighting and handy side tables. Desks, flatscreen TVs with cable channels, tea-making facilities and safe are all standard amenities and higher category rooms add more square meterage and comfortable seating. Clean and smart ensuite bathrooms provide hot-water rainfall showers, glass screened to keep the room dry with ample bench space and towel racks.
We love the breezy living spaces with lounge chairs and couches overlooking the leafy small garden, perfect for relaxing or catching up on holiday reading although if a rowdy crowd were staying it could be potentially disturbing directly outside the guest rooms—please don’t be that rowdy crowd. Light sleepers may find the cafe noise a distraction too, but although rather busy when we visited it was not too loud and the atmosphere seemed calm and relaxed.
Staff are friendly, and while the person who showed us around had minimal English, nevertheless we had no trouble being understood in the cafe. We think the rooms here are terrific and although you could find similar cheaper options elsewhere, the included breakfast in their excellent cafe, one of the best brunch spots in Bandung, makes it a very good value deal. Additionally Hummingbird’s central location, a short walk to museums, factory outlets and great restaurants is another plus.
We are not the only ones who believe this, so you’ll need to book in advance to nab a room at this delightful and charming spot. Note that like the majority of accommodation in Bandung, prices rise on weekends. If Hummingbird Guesthouse is full, Tama Boutique Hotel may fit the bill.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
