Relaxing old-school charm
Smack in the city centre behind Gedung Sate, Bumi Asih offers old-school charm in a relaxing garden setting.
This modest homely hotel has probably seen better days, but along with the excellent location has enough charm and comfort to make it worth considering (and in a year or two it will be deemed retro anyway).
The decent sized light–filled rooms are clean and well maintained and the beautiful garden is a winning spot to escape the heat and traffic of Bandung’s city centre. Rooms range from singles through to family size, built in a number of single and double-storey wings, each with a private terrace or balcony to enjoy the attractive grounds. Choose a room at the back to avoid any potential street noise.
Tiled air-con rooms feature comfortable wood and rattan furnishings with desks, mini fridge and TVs as standard (but mostly old box style). Beds still bounce and linen is clean and the simple essential of bedside lighting will keep night readers happy—you can even tune into the “wireless” in most rooms with old-fashioned built-in bedside radios. Ensuite bathrooms are as modest and old fashioned as the rooms, but very clean and with decent hot-water showers and bathtubs in most, who’s complaining?
Garden seating allows you to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and birdsong. A simple breakfast is included in the rate but with so many good food options nearby, we’d hit the streets for our morning sustenance or for a decent coffee head to Kamar Tujuh Koffie, an on-site hipster style cafe that has opened in the street-facing kamar tujuh (room seven) (Open We–Mo: 08:00–21:00).
Staff are friendly and seem proud of their workplace, which adds appeal to the calm ambience. Bumi Asih is a short walk to Museum Gedung Sate, Museum Geologi, and Museum Pos Indonesia as well as a row of popular factory outlets. For the same coin you can stay in a modern comfortable faceless chain, but Bumi Asih offers bags of nostalgic appeal and the garden and central location can’t be beaten. For homely comforts with more modern styling also consider Hummingbird Guesthouse or for a budget option, Buton Backpacker Lodge.
Be careful not to mix up here with the Hotel Bumi Asih Jaya Bandung—it is a different hotel.

Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
