Java Cove was one of the first of the flashier midrange hotels in Batu Karas and over the years they have not only maintained their excellent reputation but continue to be a solid option, spitting distance from the point break which is visible from some rooms.

The modern-styled two-storey brick longhouse offers everything from “Surfers Pads”—fan-cooled rooms with limited facilities and no view to spacious air-con ocean-view rooms, a Western style cafe with pizza, wine and decent coffee available, and a terrific little infinity pool and chill-out deck.

Thumbs up for the pool.

It’s no longer shiny new, but the interiors are sleek, modern and bright with colourful painted walls, wood and tiled finishes that’s all well maintained. Built-in wooden furnishings include comfy beds, and daybeds for lounging about and all rooms provide a safe and a TV, and up the scale add air-con, tea/coffee facilities and a minbar. Smart ensuite bathrooms provide hot-water rain showers at every budget. Private terraces offer splendid outdoor living space with daybeds and tables and chairs in the larger Terrace Deluxe rooms.

Daily breakfast is included, and we like that the hotel encourages guests to try local dishes and seafood at the family-owned warungs, only offering Western food on their menu.

Comfortable, bright rooms.

The swimming pool sits on a raised terrace overlooking the ocean, and though smallish is sparking blue and very tempting. The pool offers little shade, but umbrellaed sun lounges will keep you cool—grab a book and an icy Bintang and you’re good to go (well not go anywhere).

Along with the great location and smart relaxed style of this beachside hotel, what keeps the punters returning is the excellent friendly service. We think it’s decent option, but a tad on the pricey side for this part of the world, and think Villa Monyet offers a better value deal, though its a longer walk to the action. You’ll need to book ahead at Java Cove as it’s one of the most popular spots in Batu Karas.
