At the quieter end of Batu Karas, opposite the surf, a row of thatched roofs peek between the topical foliage and give the impression of a small traditional village, but on closer inspection the roofline is where the nod to tradition at Bale Karang Cottages ends—at least architecturally, the hospitality is traditionally warm.

The air-con rooms here are super cool and minimally stylish, with raw cement walls and grey tiled floors. Interiors are modestly sized without being cramped and simple contemporary wooden furniture emphasises the clean lines. Rooms offer twin, double or two double beds in the family room with contrasting white bedding that’s crisp and smart.

Although the style is tasteful and sophisticated, we feel they have missed an opportunity with the view, as there is only a narrow window in the front of the room along one side, and the interiors are a tad dark, however it’s conducive to a good sleep and you can always enjoy the outlook from your private furnished terrace or the double-storey onsite restaurant/lounge.

Black-and-white photographs add to the mood and a small wall-mounted TV and DVD player is compensation for lack of sea vista (although we wish they had tucked away all the messy cords). Outdoor-style ensuite bathrooms enhance the tropical ambience, continuing the minimal style, and you can enjoy a hot shower in the river-pebbled garden. Although rooms share a wall, they are slightly staggered to create privacy on the terraces.

Smart modern rooms.

A small lawn in front of the rooms gives kids a spot to run off a bit of steam with a low brick wall to keep them off the road. Breakfast is included, but the restaurant area didn’t seem to be operating when we visited—several eateries are a short walk away.

We like the mix of modern and tradition here, and prefer this quieter end of the beach to the more popular strip, however if you’d rather to be in the thick of it, Java Cove offers minimal modern rooms, some with sea views.
