Opposite the beach, and a short walk to the surf and action of Batu Karas, amidst a tropical garden the four large sea-facing traditional thatch-roofed lumbungs at Villa Monyet house a range of seven lovely rooms and are our top pick for a relaxing stay.

Spacious and clean and designed to unwind, the decor is cool and calm with pale tiled floors and aqua accents. Rooms are kitted out with comfy mosquito-netted beds and wooden furniture enhanced with trinkets from the sea, and amenities include a safe and a TV. East-facing glass fronted doors nab the sunrise and keep the rooms bright throughout the day.

Some rooms catch the sea breeze, but add a fan for when the air is still while others are air-con cooled. Regardless you can enjoy the salty gusts from all, hanging in a hammock on your balcony or terrace. Semi-outdoor ensuite bathrooms are clean and modern with hot-water showers.

Rooms can sleep up to six in the Family Surf Bungalow, with three double beds and others with a double plus a single or couples can take the romantic option in the Reef Break Bungalow closest to the beach or Point Break Bungalow overlooking the fishpond. Breakfast is included in the rates and the wonderful Jungle Kitchen is available for simple snacks or for guests to cook if they wish. Help yourself to tea, coffee or water or just hang out in the relaxing space and choose a book from the library or use the free WiFi (although the signal is not that great).

Smart and clean rooms.

Occasional seafood barbecues are a highlight, and included if you stay for seven nights or more. To explore the local area, bikes are available for free or Villa Monyet can organise tours and local cultural activities including cooking or music classes.

If you’re here to surf, the friendly staff can give you the lowdown on the swell, and if you’ve never hit a wave and are keen to try, they have champion surfers to teach you, there’s even kid-friendly waves for the grommets.

To find Villa Monyet, as you enter Batu Karas and hit the beach, make a sharp turn left and continue 350 metres up the road opposite the sea and sand.

We love the relaxed tropical ambience here, but if they are full, try the thatched-roofed, but modern-styled Bale Karang just up the road, or the very popular modern-style Java Cove. If you don’t mind being away from the beach, and are looking for a traditional feel, The Ermaja’s Pavilion is also worth a look.
