Just off one of Bogor’s main arteries, Jalan Jendral Sudirman, and less than a kilometre to the Botanical gardens, Wisma Bogor Permai is a small and simple but cosy guest house—a little worn at the edges but with enough charm to feel “classic” rather than simply old.

The imposing style street-side building that houses the lobby lounge and cafe and perhaps the family home, looks like you may be entering a bank with its grand columned portico rather than a modest hotel, however once inside, the green plastic chairs and folding card tables in the cafe give it away, although the rattan furniture in the lobby perhaps harks to the buildings historical roots.

The rooms are tucked behind the main entrance in an L-shaped double-storey block overlooking a very narrow courtyard garden. Tiled interiors are air-con, and despite large picture windows, some rooms are a tad dark, with the light blocked by a high wall edging the garden, although we were unable to view the upper level rooms which may enjoy more natural light.

Standard rooms are modestly sized, but with enough space that two people could comfortable store bags and still have room to move, while Deluxe rooms are almost twice the size. Whitewashed walls and honey-coloured wooden furnishings, doors and window frames are evocative of a nostalgic colonial style if you squint and ignore the greying but clean sheets and scuffed and stained surfaces. Decent spring beds are firm and bouncy, and bedside lighting, tables and decor provide the rooms with more of a hotel feel than a mismatched homestay.

Rooms are no frills, but bright and quite spacious.

Rooms are equipped with a desk and small flatscreen TV and a mini-fridge although you’ll have to unplug the TV or lamps to charge your devices. The ensuite bathrooms have seen better days, but are clean enough, all with hot-water and some with bathtubs. Lower floor terraces are semi-partitioned from the adjoining room for privacy, furnished with rattan tables and chairs shaded by bamboo blinds (that really could do with replacing), presenting a pleasant spot to enjoy the leafy garden.

Upstairs an unfurnished shared balcony runs the length of the rooms. An included Asian-style breakfast is served in the lobby cafe, but if it’s not substantial enough, pop next door to the charming Doea Tjangkia Restaurant. The owner at Wisma Bogor Permai is very friendly and helpful and can point you in the direction of local food and transport. Although the guesthouse is relatively close to the gardens, the actual entrance is a further kilometre away, but easily reached via minibus if you don’t wish to walk.
