Jeng Tini Guesthouse is our top flashpacker pick in Bogor, and although it’s a little bit of a walk (2.4 kilometres) to the botanical gardens (or a short angkutan ride), it more than makes up for it in value, comfort and style.

Housed in what looks like a converted suburban bungalow, and set back from the road within a leafy garden, Jeng Tini offers neat, spotless and bright rooms in double, twin and single options that are compact, without feeling a squeeze. The air-con tiled rooms are cool and fresh, adding a touch of Indonesian retro to the modern styling. Depending on the time of day, some rooms are brighter than others as some windows face a courtyard.

Comfy!

Beds sport thick and comfy mattresses and snowy white linen and all the rooms we viewed offered bedside lighting, a small table and lounge chairs. A tiny flatscreen TV with cable channels provides an alternative to the WiFi, although placed at a rather odd angle in most rooms. Clean ensuite bathrooms are “wet-style” with hot showers and some with the washbasins in the bedroom. We didn’t notice any hooks or shelves, but a bamboo rack in the room provides a spot for your towel.

Breakfast is included and can be served in your room, or in the cosy open communal area within the garden. Here you can also help yourself to filtered water and snacks, listen to the frogs and tinkering water in the pond and birdsong in the trees—the comfortable homely ambience almost makes you forget you’re in the middle of one of Indonesia’s larger cities.

An area to relax in.

Staff we spoke to didn’t have a lot of English, but were helpful and managed to communicate enough. Angkutans, the local mini-buses, run straight past the door into the centre of town for the train and bus station and the gardens, although with the traffic and one way streets it can be just a quick to walk—ojeks make a quicker alternative. If you are too tired to venture further for dinner, a local ayam goreng restaurant is next door.

As with most Bogor accommodation, weekends add a 50,000 rupiah surcharge. Bookings are advised for weekends and if they are fully booked, a couple of slightly tireder options are worth consider—the garden rooms at Wisma Pakuan or closer to the city centre, Wisma Bogor Permai. If Bogor’s heat is getting to you, newer Cozzy Kostel (opened in August 2107), offers a swimming pool and more of a hotel-like feel.
