Quiet, clean and spacious
Within Pangandaran’s backpacker enclave, Villa Angela offers great value on a budget.
Housed in a large older-style double-storey brick building with a decorative stone facade, down a quiet lane 200 metres to West Beach, spacious airy rooms flooded with natural light are clean and comfortable. The two upstairs twin rooms are mirror images with two small balconies each, and downstairs a large family room accommodates a double room and a twin along with a full kitchen and lounge.
Rooms are air-con, or for a cheaper rate a standard fan can be supplied, and with the windows open the cross breeze is cool enough with neither. The tiled rooms are very quiet and offer a lot of privacy, furnished with wood and bamboo and some interior walls are clad with bamboo that adds to the tropical feel.
Beds provide foam mattresses and just a bottom sheet and blanket, so you may want to pack a sleep sheet or sarong. We’d add a mozzie net too, so you can keep the windows open at night, as there are a few of the little biters about. A water dispenser is supplied in each room to save you buying plastic bottles and for entertainment, a tiny old box-style TV was strangely padlocked within a wooden wall-mounted cage (it may be considered an antique?).
Ensuite bathrooms are old and very basic, but scrubbed till they gleam, with a mandi, cold-water shower and Western toilet. Friendly staff offer a thermos of hot water every night and morning if you’d like a warm water mandi too. Washbasins are placed within the main room, and a kitchen sink also sits in a small alcove in the twin rooms.
Furnished balconies at the front are a lovely spot to enjoy your included local-style breakfast or an afternoon Bintang (available from the hotel), and the balcony at the back sports a drying rack for your smalls.
Villa Angela is foreign owned but managed by a lovely local family who will go out of their way to make your stay pleasant and they can offer slightly cheaper rates for single travellers and deals for a longer stay.
If you would prefer a more lively atmosphere where you’re more likely to meet other travellers, Mini Tiga Homestay just along the lane offers decent rooms and terrific communal areas. If you have deeper pockets, nearby Adam’s Homestay is well worth the extra outlay with private bungalows and a swimming pool within a beautiful tropical garden.
