Bamboo House
For 90,000 rupiah, you can’t really expect much from a hotel, but Bamboo House goes above and beyond to provide budget rooms renovated in late 2011. They are clean and modern and come with spring beds fitted with good sheets, very clean cold water bathrooms with showers and Western toilets, pedestal fans and a balcony that’s simply perfect for hanging out on and chatting with other guests should the mood strike you. There’s free WiFi and the included breakfast is basic, but you can always order an extra fruit salad if you have a large appetite. The owners can organise tours and onward travel if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself. This place is fantastic value.

Rinjani Homestay
Rinjani Homestay is located right across the lane from the over-hyped Mini Tiga Homestay and just a short walk to the beach. Most of the rooms have spring beds, old TVs which look to have been excavated from an archaeological dig, cold water showers and Western toilets. The verandahs here are well-shaded for most of the day and are a great place to unwind with a book or eat your complimentary breakfast or surf the free WiFi. The only downside to Rinjani is that the vibe here is not as sociable as Mini Tiga Homestay and this may be the deciding factor for those looking for a bit more fun. Atmosphere aside, Rinjani is a great place to stay with rooms around the 100,000 rupiah mark for a double.

Mini Tiga Homestay
Mini Tiga is by far the most popular backpacker haunt in town due to its prominence in the guidebooks. This popularity is only justified because of a nifty little communal area that encourages interaction among travellers. But the rooms here are disappointing with marked walls, old foam beds and cold water bathrooms with Western toilets and showers which are a little dingy especially when compared to those over at Bamboo House. Mini Tiga may once have been the holy grail of budget accommodation in Pangandaran, but times have moved on and it needs to lift its game if it wants to keep up with the competition. The atmosphere here is still great, as is the free WiFi and breakfast, but this will not be enough for many. Atmosphere versus room quality — this is the choice you will have to make. 110,000 rupiah for a double.

Century Hotel
The Century Hotel is more geared towards flashpackers or those backpackers sick of grubby rooms. The rack rates here are quite steep and usually apply to weekends when throngs from Bandung arrive for rest and relaxation. But on weekdays the hotel offers incredible discounts with a room for 250,000 rupiah not too difficult to come by. For this price you get extremely modern rooms with cable TVs, spring beds with great linen and immaculately clean hot water bathrooms. It really is a great deal if you can snag one of these discounts and is certainly worth the extra expense when compared to the likes of Mini Tiga Homestay.

This is but a small selection of the accommodation available in Pangandaran. Most of the budget stuff is located at the northern end of the beach in the lanes that run perpendicular from the beach and it doesn’t take long to check these places out for yourself. As always, negotiate hard and you may just get a great deal.
