Container glamping by the river
We weren’t expecting to stumble upon Hau Eco Lodge when we visited Citumang.
Locally known as Green Valley, one of Pangandaran’s natural attractions, Citumang is a good 17 kilometres from the shops, restaurants and beach scene of Pangandaran itself, but it is worth considering for a bit of a getaway—you will need your own transport though if you want to go out and about.
The lodge describes itself as “glamping”, with a collection of colourful converted shipping containers suspended over the river’s edge, open to the natural surrounds and connected via wooden walkways. Interiors are more than a step up from camping, and akin to a smart contemporary hotel room with air-con, cable TV, a comfy double and single bed along with fun travel quotes painted on the wall.
Large windows cut into the container provide gorgeous views of the river below and surrounding forest yet the containers are staggered in a way that they are relatively private. Compact ensuite bathrooms are slick and clean, with modern amenities including a glass screened hot-water shower and Western toilets. We are informed the waste water is treated in an environmentally friendly way too, so as not to impact on the pristine surrounds. All that’s missing here is WiFi connection—so you really can experience the environment without distraction.
Step out onto your private balcony, pull up a stool hewn from a log and breathe in the fresh air. A communal platform scattered with comfy beanbags is another delightful spot to enjoy the smells and sounds of the forest and rushing water. Breakfast is included, served in a larger riverside converted container cafe and other meals are available. A few local warungs are within walking distance to add a bit of variety.
A number of giant inflatables are on hand to add a bit of fun to your river antics and one section of the lodge is set up for one of Indonesian’s favourite pastimes—Instagramming. Some of the props are a little cheesy for our taste, and we think the natural environment is more of a highlight, but this area is free for guests to fill their feed and 50,000 rupiah for non guests.
We like the concept of Hau Eco Lodge, but think rooms are rather pricey for what is on offer, but that doesn’t seem to deter Indonesia’s city dwellers from the opportunity of a bit of nature with modern comforts, so it’s wise to book ahead.
Nearby at Green Valley you can partake in body rafting, trekking or just soaking your feet in the natural fish spa. Private transport can easily be arrange to visit other nearby sights from here too. If the location is too far from Pangandaran for you, Bale’Ku built entirely of bamboo, also embraces the natural surrounds, and is located around three kilometres from West Beach.
