If all you need is a place to sleep and offer you a feed (and a few coldies), Jungle Feet does the trick, and the view doesn’t get any better—straight across from Turtles surf break.

Run by a friendly local family, this is Turtle’s best value budget choice (although we still think its a bit pricey for a double). Mostly housed in a simple raised L-shaped longhouse with an additional smaller lower level block, twin and double fan-cooled rooms provide mozzie netted beds with foam mattresses, or in the case of one we viewed, a mattress on the floor. You might be lucky to score a plastic chair too.

Expect basic and peeling paintwork, but rooms are kept clean and fresh. Two well-scrubbed share bathrooms provide cold-water mandis (bucket showers), one with a squat toilet and one with a bucket flush Western throne. One room (the pick of the crop) not only adds a small table and painting to brighten the walls, but also has an ensuite with a shower, and we were informed it wasn’t any more expensive… but it was fully booked.

The raised dining/bar/chill area overlooks the waves and this is where your included local-style meals are served and as they say on their website: “always beers available”. As is the case with most guesthouses along this strip, rates are per person and include all meals. The talk is mostly about the swell, but the vibe is friendly and non surfers visiting to see the turtles won’t feel out of place.

This is a good place for a digital detox, as there’s no WiFi and the phone signal is iffy at best. Jungle Feet also offers a second place to stay, 100 metres south and set further back from the beach, where the rooms all have ensuite bathrooms, but they we were unable to view at the time of research in late 2017.

Airport pickup can be arranged (with cold beers for sale in the car!). If you’d prefer a little more space, privacy and comfort, check out Turtles Bungalows or if you really don’t care where you sleep and just want to surf, a number of basic surf flophouses can be found along the strip too.
