Despite its name, Turtle Beach Hotel is a good four kilometres to Ujung Genteng’s turtle sanctuary, and only slightly closer to Turtle’s surf break, although it is likely that there are turtles all along this shoreline.

Something about this modern-style double-storey seaside hotel reminds us of mid-century Miami or Australia’s Gold Coast—perhaps the curved facade and organic shaped swimming pool had something to do with it. Most rooms are set up for family stays with two separate bedrooms and an interconnecting lounge, but a few standard doubles (called singles here) are also available.

Turtle Beach Hotel is a bit of a work in progress, and regardless of the worn looking exterior that needs a lick of paint, the air-con tiled rooms are smart, clean and freshly painted with bold coloured feature walls and funky “Pinterest style” decals. Matching built-in furnishings present a smart, cohesive look and crisp white linens with throw cushions and bed runners that match the contrasting walls add a finishing touch.

Glass frontage ensures a bright interior and offers a decent sea view from most rooms, particularly those on the top floor, but thin curtains may not encourage a holiday sleep in, but hey you’ll want to be up early to catch the best waves anyway. Amenities include a mini-fridge, tea kettle, TV with cable and DVD player and the larger family rooms add a water cooler as well as a fully furnished lounge. Ensuite bathrooms are clean with modern facilities including a hot shower, although reviews mention it’s not always that hot, and we did view one unrenovated bathroom (ask for an upgraded room when booking). Furnished private terraces and balconies overlook the pretty landscaped garden dotted with shady palms and the pool.

We were informed that the beach here is not safe for swimming (and there’s no waves to surf), but the large interlocking-triple-circle-shaped swimming pool is clean and a refreshing alternative, and the friendly owner mentioned that some broken tiles in the surrounds are to be fixed in the ongoing renovations (be careful until then). For other water based fun, the hotel offers kayaks for hire too.

Breakfast is included in the rates (for four in the family rooms), and other meals are available in the onsite restaurant. There is also the option to buy (or catch) some fresh fish and have the restaurant prepare it for you for a small fee. Turtle Beach Hotel is close to the main village area and it is possible to walk to warungs and small shops from here, but if you want to surf, you’ll need transport—unless you don’t mind a long walk to the waves.

Staff are friendly and keen to please, although most lack English, but the owner who speaks very good English can come to the rescue. If you don’t need to be walking distance from the surf, Turtle Beach Hotel offers the best value hotels-style rooms in the area. Note that prices rise on weekends.

Alternatively, for other hotel-style accommodation, the midrange “Marlin” rooms at Pondok Hexa are reasonable value, but avoid the cheaper rooms here as they are not good value or for more of a resort feel (and higher price), traditional style Ocean View offers large joglos that sleep up to eight in a pretty garden setting.
