At Borobudur’s door
So you’ve come to Yogya to explore the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site of Borobudur? Maximise your time at the temple by spending a night at Manohara Hotel, bordering the monument.
Unlimited entry to Borobudur is included during your stay, which (so the helpful reception staff mentioned) equates to two day's entry for a one-night stay. If you are really into history or temples or just a keen photographer and wanted to capture the stupa in various lights, this is an excellent deal considering that the entry fee to the temple alone is 280,000 rupiah per person. In-house guests are also offered discounted private dawn entry to visit before the hordes arrive at the official opening time (250,000 rupiah discounted from 400,000 rupiah).
Manohara has a library and study centre, and screens a documentary about the temple too, so you can experience full-on immersion, however there’s not a lot to do here otherwise. There's no pool; staff said that this is due to the heritage nature of the environment.
Peppering the lush manicured grounds, comfortable air-con rooms occupy duplex, triplex and longer blocks resembling traditional Javanese jolgo architecture with peaked roofs. Rooms are not huge, but adequate and super clean. Well-appointed interiors feature tasteful classic styling with teak details and traditional motifs such as lamps echoing wayang kulit, or shadow puppets. Comfy beds, either twins or queen-size, a small desk, TV, minibar and coffee and tea-making facilities are standard. Small ensuite bathrooms are equipped with a glass-screened hot-water shower, and hairdryer.
Glass doors open to a pleasant furnished terrace overlooking the gorgeous garden. Free WiFi is available in public areas and you can be entertained by a traditional gamelan music performance in the lobby most afternoons.
The hotel restaurant enjoys views to Borobudur, and serves the included buffet breakfast, which is a great way to start the day. Staff are friendly and professional, and you just can’t beat the location. Manohara Hotel is popular with tour groups, and gets very busy during festival times such as Waisak Day, so it's wise to book ahead.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
