Traditional good value
Set behind a well-established tropical garden, Wisma Ary’s Hotel is a delightful Javanese-style small hotel that offers excellent value comfortable rooms.
Particularly good deals are available for single travellers on a budget, for as well as the usual twins, doubles and family rooms, single-bed rooms are offered for a very competitive rate. A double-storey L-shaped brick block houses the well-maintained older-style rooms with those upstairs enjoying high peaked ceilings and views over the garden. Noise from traffic and the nearby mosque here is more apparent than in the quieter downstairs rooms. Clean, tiled air-con interiors feature white-painted exposed brick walls and classically styled dark wooden and bamboo furniture. Teak doors and window frames and stained glass panels above the windows add traditional charm. Beds are very comfortable, and sport batik bedcovers and mosquito nets. A small flatscreen TV, tea and coffee making facilities and free WiFi sweeten the deal.
Ensuite hot-water bathrooms are a stark contrast to the otherwise sedate style of the bedrooms — they’re wonderfully bizarre, and you’re going to love or hate them (our preference was the former… we think). Cave-like walls are three dimensional and painted in a multitude of graffiti style colours. You can live out any fantasies you may have of being the Venus in a Botticelli painting as the shower sits over a shell-shaped tub (nude selfie anyone?). If you have mobility problems, you may have an issue as there are steps to climb into the deep tab, but none out, however the shower is handheld, and could just as easily be pulled away from the wall. With all the colour and fantasy we found it hard to tell if the bathrooms was really clean, however it was clean enough.
Rooms open to a common veranda, and tables and chairs provide a spot to enjoy the garden. Friendly staff serve the included basic breakfast with a choice of toast or noodles which can be taken in the restaurant near reception, or in the lovely traditional small joglo in the garden. Online rates were slightly lower than walk-in rates when we visited, but they happily matched the price.
Wisma Ary’s is a 10-minute walk to Jalan Prawirotaman, but several excellent restaurants nearby mean you don’t have to venture far to dine. If you’re keen for a swim, Delta Homestay on Jalan Prawirotaman II is a good alternative, as it offers well maintained older style rooms and has a swimming pool.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
