Run by our friends who also run the terrific and popular hostel Good Karma, Happy Buddha had not yet opened its doors when we visited in November 2016, which is a pity as we’d have moved right in, however we did get to have a sneak preview.

In the heart of the kampung area behind busy Jalan Prawirotaman, Happy Buddha occupies a converted suburban house with four air-con rooms (with ensuite) opening to a spacious communal area, and three fan-cooled rooms with share bathrooms, towards the back. Like its sister property, Happy Buddha has a relaxed and arty ambience with many colourful and fun details, however here feels slightly more sophisticated.

Rooms are simple, spacious, bright and airy, each with a different feature wall painted in a soothing deep colour with a stylish hand-painted mandala deigned by a local artist, excellent for getting your OM on. Wooden beds are comfortable and coloured linen complements the feature wall. Simple bamboo hanging racks offer a spot for Mahatma coat (or your robes).

Cute!

Ensuites and one of the two share bathrooms provide hot-water showers, and the other a rather unique outdoor cold shower where refreshing water flows from an overhead bucket, ideal for battling Yogya’s steamy heat. As Happy Buddha is brand new, of course rooms and bathrooms are spotless, but if it’s as well cared for as Good Karma, it’s likely to remain that way.

Happy Buddha offers several areas to chill: a converted (holy?) cow barn (yes, really) in the front garden strung with hammocks and waving prayer flags is terrific, yet the comfy bale in the back yard is a great reading nook too. We love the comfortable and creative atmosphere, and if that suits your personality, you’re sure to connect with like-minded folk here too. WiFi and breakfast are included in the rate and your friendly hosts can offer free travel tips.

More hangout space.

If you’d prefer a more conventional guesthouse, Omah Salam nearby has neat rooms facing a pretty garden or Next Door Homestay near Good Karma offers a comfortable homely atmosphere.
