Within the labyrinth of Gang 1 off Jalan Sosrowijayan, Pawon Cokelat Guesthouse is hard to find but like chocolate, is well worth seeking out, as it’s the best-value and most stylish flashpacker in the centre of town.

Towards the northern end of the tiny lane, look up to find the easily missable, modern post-brutalist concrete-slab building, softened with a curtain of hanging greenery.

Once inside, the small hotel offers a haven from the busy streets with its vertical gardens and airy open balconies furnished with industrial vintage chairs and adorned with vegetation. Smallish air-con rooms are bright and cool with a mix of polished concrete and white painted walls, setting the tone for the sleek contemporary design.

Golden wooden furniture and door frames add warmth and bright blue bedcovers contrast with crisp white sheets on the comfy beds, completing the fresh look. A built-in desk provides workspace or simply somewhere to stash your bag off the floor and a small flatscreen TV with satellite channels mounted to the wall keeps it minimal, but a step up from bare-bones basic. Ensuite hot-water bathrooms would look fairly austere if it weren’t for the colourful patchwork of concrete tiles. We like that the wash bucket provided is metal and not plastic.

The owners have worked with local architectural and graphic designers to create an original and comfortable space. We love the signage, especially a large map of Yogya painted on one wall—great for a quick visual overview of the city. Free WiFi is best accessed by rooms closer to the common areas. Breakfast is included and a small cafe serves coffee and chocolate drinks (of course).

And if you’re wondering about the name, which translates to “chocolate kitchen”, the owner is a chocolate lover who makes and sells chocolate cakes in nearby Jalan Sosrowijayan. Pawon Cokelat Guesthouse is a hair’s breadth from busy Jalan Malioboro, close to trains, buses and more food stalls and tatty souvenir stands then you’ve possibly seen before. Staff are friendly, but some struggle a bit with English. If you like to be in the thick of Backpackerstan, but prefer more polished digs than the surrounding fleapits, Pawon Cokelat Guesthouse may offer the ambience you seek.
