Amid the tangle of passageways in Sosrowijayan, tucked into the side street that runs alongside Rama Hotel, a patch of green hides Dewi Homestay from the street.

The guesthouse offers a handful of rooms that are bursting with character and charm.

Mosaic floors, carved teak panelling, antiques and bric-a-brac add homely touches to the appealing rooms. Mozzie-netted four-poster beds in some amplify the romance. Facilities vary from room to room, but generally interiors are spacious and spic and span, all with private ensuite bathroom. Most however are cold-water only—great for cooling down as you wash away the day’s grime. Some bathrooms have been given a contemporary update and some are without washbasins, yet all are basic and clean.

Upstairs rooms offer a small communal balcony, and most provide outside seating. Free WiFi can be accessed in the delightful garden area, and if you look up from your device, it’s an excellent spot to mingle with other travellers. The friendly and welcoming owners will cook you an included breakfast before you wander the 150 metres to Jalan Malioboro to explore.

This long-running homestay has the edge on other nearby oldies simply due to the fact the owners have kept it well maintained while others seem less cared for. We think Dewi Homestay is a pretty good deal, but it becomes particularly good value for a longer stay as prices are negotiable. Another old-school losmen worth considering is nearby Setia Kawan, especially if you have a thing for ’70s hippy-style murals (but don’t pass the gangja man, it’s Indonesia).
