This sweet funky heritage home is well hidden in a back street just 300 metres from Jalan Malioboro, and is run by a bunch of local folk just like you — a ’fixer’ for the BBC, a travel writer, and a graphic designer.

It’s not a hotel, but their home, and they share it with travellers. Opened in December 2015, it was still looking smart and loved when we visited in November 2016. The owners have done an excellent job transforming an old ice factory, yet keeping its heritage look with the beautiful original floors and doors, adding vintage furniture, as well as some they designed themselves from upcycled abandoned materials.

The B and B offers an eight-bed mixed dorm and three private double rooms, all with share bathroom. They say, it’s “nothing fancy” as there’s no air-con or hot water, but we disagree, and the fans and cold-water rain shower are sufficient. Unfortunately the private rooms were full, and we only viewed the dorm. We liked that there are no bunk beds in the spacious airy room, and the comfy single beds are low to the ground, each with smart chocolate and teal linen, towel provided, and individual standard fan. Box-like bedheads contain a small shelf and power outlet. It does, however lack privacy, and is a bit summer-camp-style.

Share bathrooms are clean, and as well as a traditional style bathroom with rain-shower inside the house, there’s a fabulous outdoor shower with a fun bamboo pipe that adds a touch of “Brazil”. The communal spaces are terrific, especially the upstairs balcony with lounges, guitars and views across the rooftops. Free WiFi and breakfast are included in the rate, and the friendly hosts will make you feel at home in their home, and offer some local insight to life in this vibrant city.

Yogyakarta BnB’s only negative is that it’s quite hard to find. Look for the only signage: the number “19”. If you’d prefer a regular hostel environment with more private bunks, The Packer Lodge is an excellent option, but doesn’t offer the same homey ambience.
