Smart modern and comfortable city hotel
If a modern chain hotel is more your style (hey we get it and won’t judge), Hotel Neo Malioboro is smart, spotless, and ticks all the boxes for mid-range comfort.
An excellent city location means you couldn’t get closer to the railway station if you were on the train. As well as the rooms having a lot more charm than a standard air-con box, the reception staff are some of the friendliest and most hospitable we have encountered in this style of hotel. We were surprised, however, by their “uniform”: the female staff are required to wear funky platinum-blonde wigs with their black tunics, fitting with the slightly quirky style of the hotel.
The bright and good-sized tiled rooms offer relaxed contemporary decor in white and grey with pops of orange. We love the photographic street scene of old Yogya as a decorative bed head decal and the stylish metal lamps reminiscent of the street lights of the city. Beds are thick and bouncy with quality linens and pillows. Amenities include a desk with international power sockets, mini-bar, flatscreen TV, tea and coffee maker, small safe and high speed WiFi. A comfy lounge chair in the standard rooms offers a spot to relax and browse the TravelFish site and is upped by a sofa in the deluxe rooms.
Clean mosaic-tiled bathrooms are a tad small, but provide plenty of bench space, and a glass-screened hot-water rain shower. A decent-sized outdoor swimming pool on the second floor overlooks the lower rooftops nearby and is open to non-guests for 50,000 rupiah, which includes a plate of nasi goreng, but you’ll have to BYO towel. The top floor skylounge affords great city views, and you can be entertained by live music nightly. Noodle Now restaurant serves the included buffet breakfast and offers daily changeable “all-you-can-eat” deals.
Hotel Neo Malioboro was opened in June 2015, and it was still very new and well maintained when we popped in November 2016; hopefully the high standard of cleanliness will continue. Some excellent deals can be found online, bringing this mid-range hotel well into flashpacker territory, which makes it excellent value.
Other recommend comfortable midrange options can be found in the Prawirotaman area — both Greenhost Boutique Hotel and Adhistana Hotel offer a little more style than most.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
