Clean, simple and friendly, Wake Up Homestay is not really a homestay, but a modern hostel offering pod-style dorms.

Select from a choice of 10-bed mixed dorms, four-bed mixed or female dorms or a family room, which is set up in the same pod style with double-sized bunk beds.

The “Ikea-style” air-con rooms are light and bright with white walls, pale wood and chartreuse curtained pods. Floor tiles gleam, and the rooms smell fresh. Pods provide personal reading lights, power sockets and a towel rail (with towel) and the beds sport crisp white linen and snug doonas, so no need to pack a sleep sheet. Upper bunks are really high, which gives lots of headspace for the lower bunk, however as the mattresses are so thick and cosy, the safety rail is blocked and serves no purpose, so if you toss and turn, you’d be safer on a lower bunk. Roomy lockers easily fit large bags and require padlocks, which can be borrowed with a deposit or just bring your own.

Staff mentioned that a noisy club across the road can be heard at night, so if you’re a light sleeper request a room on the opposite side and bring earplugs. Share bathrooms are basic but clean with hot-water showers and separate toilets. Instagrammable illustrations of local historic buildings adorn the walls of the common area downstairs which offers plenty of comfy lounges, free computer stations and a small library. The mood is calm and serene, not really buzzing like some other hostels, so excellent if you’re after a bit of quiet time. A rooftop chill-out area provides a bit of outdoor space too. WiFi is free and a very basic breakfast is included. Staff are friendly and helpful can help organise tours and point you in the right direction from getting from A to B.

Wake Up Homestay is about 500 metres from Jalan Malioboro and 300 metres from Yogyakarta train station. If you’d prefer a hotel with a bit more action, The Packer Lodge is a great choice in the city centre.
