The main double-storey building offers a four-bed dorm and the superior double rooms, while the standard doubles occupy another building about 500 metres away (we were unable to view these). Bamboo Bamboo also offer a self-contained house nearby, sufficient for four adults.

All rooms are equipped with air-con and are spacious, clean and bathed in light. The tiled dorm looks great with its bright white interior and snazzy pops of primary colours for the bed sheets, however the large window looks to the main communal area, and though screened with bamboo (with large gaps), the curtains are a tad thin and it lacks a bit of privacy. Metal Ikea-style bunks are a little rickety for our liking, not that they are unsafe, just a bit creaky and fine if you don’t toss and turn. Having only four beds is a bonus and bunks provide individual lighting and power sockets too. Medium sized lockable lockers are probably only good for a small bag and your valuables (keys are supplied) and a couple of colourful metal chairs bolted to the wall creates a fun unusual “wardrobe”.

The clean ensuite bathroom is handy, and the shower is hot. Private rooms take the bamboo theme, and give it a good run for its money, extending to the tones of the painted walls and pale yellow or neutral coloured bed linen. The look is fresh, calm and tropical. Beds are very comfortable and facilities include a flatscreen TV with cable channels and a handy selection of snacks. Spotless bathrooms continue the bamboo theme even further.

Near the lobby a spacious shared kitchen and communal lounge encourage you soak up the ambience of the bamboo-trimmed garden and mingle with other guests. WiFi is free and breakfast is included with the private rooms. Friendly and helpful staff, along with its good location, a stone’s throw from Jalan Prawirotaman, add to the positives and make Bamboo Bamboo a solid choice. If you like the natural theme, but would prefer a more private garden setting, the (one) garden room at Pondok Ijo has a fabulous and unusual rattan pod-like bed.
