Dwarfed by the Hotel Medan next door, Hotel Prapat is a simple three-storey complex which pretends to be nothing other than what it is: a small budget hotel.

In the heart of town and next to the river, it’s within easy walking distance of most of Banda Aceh’s attractions, while scores of food carts set up on the roads around the building during the evening, making finding dinner a simple affair.

The tiled rooms could do with a lick of paint and can be stinking hot, while noise tends to echo throughout, but at the prices charged, one can’t complain. Beds are foam mattresses with no top sheet, towels are discoloured, no toilet paper is provided, showers are of the refreshing cold water variety and a single fan agitates the air in the cheapest and most popular rooms.

You can upgrade to air-con for a few extra thousand rupiah, but this really isn’t the sort of hotel that you come to for that. This place is about being cheap, and on that count it delivers.
