Russian-run Whales and Waves is the only proper hotel on Kertasari Beach and it offers a range of modern rooms suitable to a midrange budget — especially to travelling families looking for a bit of beachside downtime.
The lawn grounds are oversized and include a bamboo restaurant, hammocks strung between coconut palms, a modern playground and the actual accommodation, which is comprised mostly of family villas and a single longhouse towards the rear of the grounds which houses the standard and deluxe rooms. There are also a handful of rustic “surfer huts”, which are bamboo and rattan old-school shacks with shared bathroom facilities (contact them directly for the rates on these).
The air-con, modern but compact rooms are very clean and have art decorating the walls. Bathrooms have warm-water showers but feel doubly oversized given the small size of the bedroom. The standard rooms are quite compact, and do not have room for an extra bed — the deluxe rooms are a little bigger and you can fit an extra mattress into those. They lack TV and WiFi, which really should be in the rooms at this price-point.
Complicating the value slightly is the stunning but kind of pricey restaurant. Food is uniformly Western and set — there is no menu for lunch and dinner, with both coming in two courses. The food is good — especially considering sourcing some ingredients must be challenging, but given there are no other eating options, lunch and dinner at 100,000 rupiah per head per meal pushes up the costs of staying here substantially. If there are two of you, that is an extra 400,000 rupiah a day.
We found the management helpful with tips on what to see and do in the area. WiFi is available in the restaurant only and can be patchy in poor weather. The resort can arrange a transfer from Sumbawa Besar airport to the hotel for US$50 (for the vehicle).
Surfing lessons, kayak hire and motorbike hire are offered. Aside from the Amanwana, this was the only place we encountered in Sumbawa that priced their rooms in US$.
