Popular place in Ban Hoxieng
Somjith (also spelled Somchith on some signs) offers clean and comfy rooms in two buildings located on a short, less trafficked lane running up from the Mekong.
Rooms in the sparkling new building are a modern, plain box with clean tile floor, windows and plusher amenities like air-con and TV. The upstairs rooms in both buildings have a big shared wooden balcony with ample tables and chairs making it a great spot to relax and enjoy the free coffee and tea on offer and the street view of the quiet neighbourhood. The rooms in the older building are just as comfortable, but the new building is obviously fresher and more attractive. This place is run by friendly and efficient folks and is one of the better value guesthouses in this area, especially if you can snag a corner room with two walls of windows. It’s also extremely popular, so advance booking is recommended.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
