Tucked away in an overgrown garden, Satri House is a French-colonial property just made for those looking for elegance and sophistication – and for those with cash to burn.
A member of Secret Retreats, this boutique hotel oozes cool colonial charm and exclusivity: canopy beds, high-beamed ceilings, Buddha statues, antique pieces and textiles. There are so many antiques and Buddhas that some may feel like it is staying in a museum, but the exquisite quality is undeniable. Some bathrooms boast massive stone tubs, there’s an old world library lounge and the gardens and lap swimming pool are lovely. Overall the property is stunning. At this expensive rate you would expect near perfection, but we have received several reports of lapses in service.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
