Good flashpacker option
Khongsavath is popular presumably because of its Mekong river location and it has a good balance of style and value – just the ticket for flashpackers.
All the rooms here are tastefully decorated and the customary hard beds are covered with colourful Lao fabrics. They have poorly lit but absolutely spotless bathrooms, which are wet-room style with electric heated shower. The ground floor rooms at the back are basic, a bit dark and dim with only small windows. The riverview rooms at the front (room #4) and on the second floor (room #3 and #1) are slightly more expensive but it is primarily due to the big windows and extra light they get rather than any decent river views. We found the staff very eager to help. Free WiFi and breakfast is included. Prices for guesthouses on the Mekong are inflated but of the lot, this is one of the few we recommend. Khongsavath Guesthouse is across the lane from The Belle Rive Hotel.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
